How we determine a block's score.

The higher the score, the more egregious and impactful.

Every block gets a score from a few public signals.

Old-growth deferral

The government's own technical panel flagged these forests as rare, endangered, and worth preserving. They are being logged anyway.

Community watershed

Your drinking water depends on these forests. The province allows them to be cut.

Block size

A block counts for more when it is large for its ecosystem — measured against other blocks in the same forest type, not just raw hectares.

Close to people

The nearer a block sits to a town or a home, the more it matters to the people who live with the result.

Big, old coastal forest

On the coast, the highest-productivity old forest — the biggest, oldest trees — carries the most weight.

Intact-watershed frontier

A cut pushing into a watershed that is still largely unlogged opens a new frontier, and is weighted accordingly.

No single factor sets the score. Each block is weighted for its own ecosystem — big-tree old growth counts most on the coast; old-growth deferrals and drinking-water watersheds count most in the interior — and the signals stack. The total places it in one of four tiers: Critical (90+), Serious (70+), Uncommon (55+), or Everyday. A block that overlaps a flagged old-growth deferral never falls below Uncommon.

CriticalEndangered, irreplaceable old growth, close to people. The worst of the worst. SeriousRare forest, or a community's consumptive watershed. UncommonBigger or closer to home than most. Worth a look. EverydayOne of the many ordinary cuts moving through right now.
